Desk transformation: A love story

There’s something incredibly special about working on a piece that carries history within it - especially when that history is deeply personal.
This recent project was a truly standout one: a huge, traditional partner’s desk that once belonged to my client’s father, a lawyer. Solid, imposing, and full of character, it had clearly been a centrepiece in its time. But like many pieces of its era, it was finished in a deep red varnish - rich and glossy, but simply not aligned with my client’s vision for her contemporary office space.
She didn’t want to lose the desk. She just needed it to feel like hers.
So, we reimagined it.
The desk transformation began with removing that heavy, dated finish. Armed with 100% undiluted acetone (and, admittedly, sacrificing a few brain cells along the way), I carefully stripped back the layers of dark varnish. What emerged underneath made it all worthwhile: the most beautiful, deep natural grain, full of warmth and movement that had been hidden for years.
From there, the real graft began.
Every inch of the desk was sanded - no small task considering it features twelve drawers and two hidden extendable side pieces. It was a labour of love, but essential to create a clean, smooth base and really let the wood speak for itself.
To maintain that newly revealed lightness while still giving the piece character, I applied a soft paint wash. This subtle layer enhanced the grain rather than masking it, striking that balance between old and new. The entire desk was then finished with a clear matte wax, giving it protection while keeping the finish understated and contemporary.
To introduce a more modern edge, six of the drawer fronts were block painted. This created a focal point across the front of the desk.
The original hardware, which had darkened and tarnished over time, was carefully cleaned and restored. Beneath the years of wear was a beautiful golden brass tone, now brought back to life and adding a touch of warmth and elegance.
Finally, the leather top - another nod to the desk’s heritage - was gently polished to nourish and protect it, ensuring it remains both functional and beautiful for years to come.
The end result is a piece that feels completely transformed, yet still honours where it came from.
My client absolutely loved it, and I can only hope her dad does too.
This desk didn’t need replacing. It just needed someone to see it differently.
And now, it’s ready for its next chapter.
